Week Commencing: 28/02/2011

This week I am beginning work on my artefact. So far I have registered the domain name easy-mobile and have setup the hosting and chosen the framework in which i will be developing the website.

Based on primary/ secondary research carried out I will be using this as a focus point and address what I see there is a demand for and taking this into account then adding functionality to the site.

Moreover aswell as the development of the artefact there is still some writing i need to cover off in order to stay on schedule.

*I will have a progress update by the end of the week.

Week at a glance

This week I am going to begin work on my artefact constructing a prototype of the website. On wednesday I'm visiting Microsoft for the day to meet with a few colleagues to discuss my ideas and a chance for me to ask them some questions.

Today I have sent the second part of my questionarrie out to further expand my research knowledge and hope to capitalise on what responses I get.

This Week

This week I'm finalising my research before making a start on the implementation.

So far I have been in touch with various contacts in different organisations and held discussions to see what their views were on collaboration, communication and the value of backing up data to the cloud using a mobile phone.

By doing primary research it has been extremely helpful and informative when making decisions on what I need to address in order to come up with a viable solution.

Along with primary research I have done extensive research into the target market and what is currently available.

I will be doing a write up to conclude what I found out by the end of this week.

Week In Progress

Following the meeting I had at Microsoft and Supervisor last week it concluded that backing up data from my windows phone (and various other smartphones) wouldnt be possible due to security restrictions placed on them. Therefore I have decided to address a similar solution taking into account the mobile and using cloud based computing/ collaboration but looking at different angle at the GSM phone market.

Aware this market is shrinking due to the growth and success of the smartphone there is still a wealth of people out there who use these types of phone and are not aware that backing them up is possible and could save them a lot problems.

Therefore solution i have come up with is to design a fully functional website taking into account that offers the user i.e. 077.... a way to store personal data of their contacts safely & securely with the possibility of allowing others to view(different levels of access priviliges).

I have yet to finialise my research and form a basic outline of my dissertation which i will be doing for the rest of the week into the next.

Supervisor Meeting - 28/01/2011

This morning I met with my supervisor and discussed a better definition of cloud collaboration as the term used in the proposal was quite vague and could encompass a wealth of topics.

Our conclusion was to use a cloud tool. That is to develop a web based tool (for the use of cloud) and an app for the windows phone in order to transmit data to an online repository. This online repository will be used to store phone data such as; contacts, messages, pictures etc. For safe keeping and ease of access anywhere in the world.

There is still a lot of speculation whether this is feasible or not due to Windows Phone being a relatively new product and the existing API's currently available to allow such a service.

With a meeting booked on Monday 31st at Microsoft I am hoping to address these issues and find out if I can proceed with what I had in mind. In the mean time I am going to carry out background with what I can find on the internet to help in my search.

Project Proposal

• Why is this project honours worthy?

What makes the project that you are proposing worthy of a student studying for a Bachelors degree?

My project is based on technologies that are the latest step in IT evolution - combining cloud based collaboration with the smartphone. Both are set to create big changes and challenges within the industry.
The smartphone and cloud market are growing at a fast rate in the UK and across the world and with tough competition between rival companies makes this study an interesting and compelling worthy cause.

• How does this project relate to your degree title outcomes?

What makes this project relevant to your chosen degree? You need to show that the project is in-line with expectations as outlined in section 3.1.

Under investigation here is at the forefront of technology. Studying a Business IT degree puts me in a great position to understand how cloud based collaboration for smartphones can transform and change businesses. From a dynamic and growing market that is rapidly expanding collaboration can be used by anyone anywhere, for many years collaboration has been available in more manual form. The use of cloud and smartphones takes this a step further allowing collaboration to be efficient, low cost and highly effective to businesses.
As an undergraduate gaining an insight to this area and its possibilities for future development puts me in a great position amongst other students. This will prove extremely valuable when applying to graduate schemes in industry.

• What are the project objectives?

The objectives must define what is to be achieved and should state how the extent of that achievement will be assessed. The problem that the project is intended to solve must be outlined and an indication given of the artefact to be produced.

Research:

• Possible solutions if cloud collaboration on the smartphone is a feasible option.
• How important is it to businesses and personal life. What effects does it have on people in different industries?
• Why would people use collaboration and are there any new ways to collaborate using the smartphone.
• Research the demand for collaboration with smartphones, why people use them as an alternative to laptops & PCs. If there is such demand, how important will this be seen by businesses.

Artefact:
Setting up a demo environment to show how a solution works. Develop and produce an application that shows how the smartphone takes advantage of cloud technology demonstrating collaboration.

Workplan:
You must include a detailed project work breakdown or a schedule of work. This may be done as e.g. a week-by-week work-plan, or a Gantt chart etc.

• Background Study: 2 ½ weeks
Research Cloud Computing and find out where it is today with smartphones.
Define research questions, find out answers for these; user studies, user analysis, collate data.
Discuss results and how to deal with these research questions.
What cloud offers that isn’t available today?

• Requirements Analysis: - Varied, amount of users to ask: 2 weeks
Evaluate and see if there is a need for collaboration on the smartphone.
What are you going to do with the smartphone?

Define Target Audience:
Research what peoples demands in industry are they have for collaboration.
What is the intended target audience conducted by Field studies & User Surveys.

• Functionality Design: 2 weeks
Application development, specification

• Prototype: 3 weeks
Testing, mock ups

• Evaluation: 1 week
Evaluation of artefact

• Data Analysis: 1 week
Evaluating the user interface, performance testing.

• Conclusion: 1 week
Results discovered about the future of Cloud and the Smartphone.
